My First Editorial Photoshoot as a Wardrobe Stylist

I have considered myself as a personal stylist for about 8 years now, but I didn’t define my business brand until this year. I figured that I needed to make it very clear that I am a personal stylist so that people would pay more attention to my content and not just think that I am posting pictures in nice outfits without a purpose. Being clearly aligned with my purpose has helped me to determine the route that I want to take when it comes to personal styling.

Yes, I am a personal stylist but there are two different types of stylists. There are personal stylists who work one-on-one with a client and wardrobe or fashion stylists who work on set by collaborating with a team of hair stylists, fashion designers, makeup artists, and possibly a director to make sure the expected look is achieved. I prefer to work one-on-one with the client to design a personal experience and to make sure the client feels confident in the outfits that I have chosen for them. However, working as a wardrobe stylist is something that I have always desired to try as well.

Last month, that desire was fulfilled when a friend of mine contacted me to work on set as the personal stylist for a makeup artist’s photoshoot. I literally got the call the day before the shoot and immediately rearranged my schedule to make sure that I could be available. I knew that this was opportunity to really showcase my skills, so I jumped at it quickly. I was responsible for creating looks based on the clothes that were provided by a vintage clothing store, Public Interest CLT and few other bridal pieces from the makeup artist and that was really fun to do. My creative mind ran wild that day being able to have majority control of the outfits that the models wore.

Even though I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into, I knew that I was going into the situation with an open mind and would give 100% no matter what. I am forever grateful that I did. Working as a wardrobe stylist was on my vision board from 2 years before and I really happy to see that it came true. Not to be cliché but this just goes to show you that remaining committed to your purpose never goes out of style.
