Meeting Fashion Inspirateur Olori Swank

Olori Swank is a Los Angeles based celebrity fashion stylist who is known for her electric blue hair and extreme penchant for detail. She is always dressed to kill whether she is wearing sneakers or stilettos. Also, she is known for being a serial entrepreneur in addition to being a celebrity fashion stylist. I am truly enamored by her style and entrepreneurial spirit so I am constantly visiting her Instagram page daily to get a dose of her fashion sense!

In my very first blog post, I wrote about Olori Swank and Shun Melson being two fashion stylists that I aspire to be like in my career as a fashion stylist. Ironically, I was scrolling through Instagram a few weeks ago, where I saw that Olori Swank posted a flyer for an event called “Dinner for Winners”. I immediately took a closer look to see what this was about, when it would take place, and where it would be held. My eyes lit up when I saw that it would be in Raleigh, NC which is about two and a half hours away from where I live so I said to myself “I am going to that event without any question!”.

I left work early on the day of the event to allow myself enough time to get my makeup done and to get to Raleigh on time as the event started at 7:30pm sharp. Before I knew it, I was walking through the doors of “Noir” where Olori Swank’s event was being held. As I walked into Olori’s event, I felt as if I had stepped into the room of a queen’s castle. The decorations were nothing short of elegant and fabulous with Olori’s style in the mix. I quickly noticed Olori amongst the other women that were crowded around her and it was easy to gauge that she had a really positive spirit about her. For that reason, I mustered up enough courage to introduce myself and tell her that she was a big inspiration to me. She quickly replied "Oh you want to be a stylist!" which gave me even more motivation to pursue my passion.

Olori wanted us to ask her questions about how we could become better business women and she was obliged to give us advice from her personal experiences. This was beneficial because we could all see that she is a successful business woman and she was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to give us valuable information to be successful too.

One major takeaway that I received from her was that just because you don’t have a fashion degree doesn’t mean that it will hinder you from entering the fashion world. This is true because Olori grew up with the idea that she was going to become a neurosurgeon and was originally a pre-med student in college. However, she broke into the world of fashion styling when she was asked by the VP of A&R at Jive Records to style an artist and the rest remains history. I do not have a degree in fashion either but I know fashion and style and I truly have a passion for both!
